Humorous look at the internet in Spain

Internet in Spain

The internet has made great inroads into Spanish life and access is widely available at internet cafés (more commonly referred to as cibercafés in Spanish), some computer shops and many locutorios. Prices vary; in cities hourly rates can be as little as €1.80, rising to around €6 in some smaller towns. Using a public computer is not wihout risks -- people standing behind you or at worst, a program that can steal your log in information could be devastating. Think of how many times you need to see your credit card or bank balance when on vacation! A better choice, if you bring your laptop with you on vacation, is to use WiFi.

WiFi in Spain

A better choice than using the sub-standard computers in many locutorios and cibercafés is to find a WiFi internet connection. Wifi is not as commonly available as in the United States, but an increasing number of Spanish hotels, schools, restaurants and cafés are making wireless internet connections possible.

FON A great company named FON is making WiFi sharing for just $2 a day--versus the $10 users pay to sign onto the 5,100 T-Mobile hotspots at U.S. Starbucks. A map of existing FON hotspots is available here.

Throughout big cities, if your antenna is sensitive enough and you are not concerned about security, unsecured WiFi installations are available for use. Free connections are harder to find, but as in other countries, WiFi activists are creating and publicizing WiFi hotspots in the major Spanish cities. One directory of such wifi locations can be found here.
